چکیده

Understanding the emergence of biological structures and their changes is a complex problem. On a biochemical level, it is based on gene regulatory networks (GRN) consisting on interactions between the genes responsible for cell differentiation and coupled in a greater scale with external factors. In this work we provide a systematic methodological framework to construct Waddington’s epigenetic landscape of the GRN involved in cellular determination during the early stages of development of angiosperms. As a specific example we consider the flower of the plant Arabidopsis thaliana. Our model, which is based on experimental data, recovers accurately the spatial configuration of the flower during cell fate determination, not only for the wild type, but for its homeotic mutants as well. The Arabidopsis FILAMENTOUS FLOWER gene is required for flower formation.

A screen for mutations affecting flower formation was carried out and several filamentous flower (fil) alleles were identified. In fil mutants, floral primordia occasionally give rise to pedicels lacking flowers at their ends. This defect is dramatically enhanced in fil rev double mutants, in which every floral primordium produces a flowerless pedicel. These data suggest that the FIL and REV ge...

Regional expression of the rice KN1-type homeobox gene family during embryo, shoot, and flower development.

We report the isolation, sequence, and pattern of gene expression of members of the KNOTTED1 (KN1)-type class 1 homeobox gene family from rice. Phylogenetic analysis and mapping of the rice genome revealed that all of the rice homeobox genes that we have isolated have one or two direct homologs in maize. Of the homeobox genes that we tested, all exhibited expression in a restricted region of th...

Molecular basis for the specification of floral organs by APETALA3 and PISTILLATA.

How different organs are formed from small sets of undifferentiated precursor cells is a key question in developmental biology. To understand the molecular mechanisms underlying organ specification in plants, we studied the function of the homeotic selector genes APETALA3 (AP3) and PISTILLATA (PI), which control the formation of petals and stamens during Arabidopsis flower development. To this ...

Developmental Changes in Time and Space Promote Evolutionary Diversification of Flowers: A Case Study in Dipsacoideae

Diversification in flower shape and function is triggered by the high plasticity of flower meristems. Minute changes in space and time can profoundly affect the formation of adult structures. Dipsacoideae provides an excellent model system to investigate the evolutionary aspects of temporal and spatial changes in flower development due to its small size, the resolved phylogenetic framework, and...

Flower Development as an Interplay between Dynamical Physical Fields and Genetic Networks

In this paper we propose a model to describe the mechanisms by which undifferentiated cells attain gene configurations underlying cell fate determination during morphogenesis. Despite the complicated mechanisms that surely intervene in this process, it is clear that the fundamental fact is that cells obtain spatial and temporal information that bias their destiny. Our main hypothesis assumes th...
